T Minus 14 Days
14 Days until I start work for the Okayama Prefecture BOE.
I have my first 3 months teaching schedule.
My first impression was that I had forgotten how many public holidays there are in Japan. At least one every month. This is very different to teaching in South Oz.
My second impression is that it is great to be going straight to the classroom to meet the students and teachers from the two schools. This is where I will be spending over 80% of my time.
Right now I should be packing up the house, just putting more things into boxes. The process of simplifying your life into 30 kilos, one rucksack, is very interesting. It is amazing how much sporting gear I have : table tennis racket, badminton racket, martial arts gloves and protectors, hand wraps let alone the gym equipment I have accumulate in the shed. Life will be much simpler with one bag of gear. Was looking for an old Japanese textbook before and came across some handy ESL teaching material from Japan. I will have to pack that and put it to good use.
Decided upon a maru batsu quiz for my self intro as there will more than likely be an expectation of presenting some sort of intro activity. A maru batsu quiz is a simple true false quiz. I write on the board a circle for maru and a cross for batsu. I will then make a statement. I am born in the year of the snake (so therefore my age must be be 12 24 36 or 48). If the students think this is true they move to the maru (circle) side of the classroom if they think it is false they move to the batsu (cross) side of the classroom. This is a false statement so all the students on the false side win and stay in the game all the students who were wrong have to sit down. Then you continue on until there is just a few people left. I have seen a whole school of 600 students perform these activities as a warm up activity in the morning. I wonder if I will have to make a speech at an assembly, better get one ready just in case...
